Global Temperature Change: Data from 1850 to 2023
Bracelet Designed by Jenny Baeseman, PhD
#ShowYourStripesgraphics created by Professor Ed Hawkins, University of Reading
The evidence of climate change and global warming are around us every day, yet there still seems to be a lack of movement to make real change. One small thing we can do is continue to raise awareness with the people around us of the problems of changing temperatures. A bigger step is to help convince decision-makers that the time to act is NOW. So #ShowYourStripes & TALK about it!
Warming Stripes are a powerful way to visually represent the warming climate trend over time. Each stripe (or bead in the bracelet), represents the average temperature for one year, and the color gradient depicts the change in temperature from the historical average. This clear and intuitive representation helps to illustrate the undeniable warming trend that our planet is experiencing. Each stripe is made up of hundreds of data points, and most charts have a hundred stripes or more – so that’s a lot of data with a clear message – and in this case a lot of data to wear

#ShowYourStripes bracelets are a fun and fashionable way to show your concern for climate change and appreciation for science. So, whether you're a CEO shaping corporate agendas, a policymaker crafting legislation, an influencer with a platform for change, an environmental enthusiast, or a normal human who cares about our planet, this fashion accessory is for you. #ShowYourStripes Bracelets aim to make for a great conversation starter to help educate about the impact of our changing climate with style.
The Global Temperature Bracelets are meticulously hand-crafted by a small woman-owned business in Wisconsin, USA. Each 1mm thick polymer clay bead corresponds to the average global temperature for that year and is individually strong on stretchy elastic cord in precise order creating a scientific product*representing hundreds of data points collected from weather stations around the globe for over 174 years. The data beads are joined together by an individually engraved #ShowYourStripes wooden bead with your choice of a penguin, polar bear, or the world in our hands on the other side. The full global temperature bracelet is 17.4 cm of clay beads plus the wooden showcase bead, making the total length of the bracelet 18.6 cm or 7.3 inches. As this can be a bit long for some people, shorter sizes are also available which start in a more recent year but still show the dramatic change in temperature. Because of the tedious nature of stringing each particular color of bead in the correct order, the bracelet takes ~20-25 minutes to complete ~ that’s lots of concentration and detail to create this stunning scientific accessory.

*Every bracelet is hand-made to by a human who cares about scientific data and climate change and tries their best to make sure the bracelet is completely accurate, but those darn little beads can be difficult at times – so if one or two are off, sincere apologies, but they are double checked for accuracy before they are sold. If you have an issue, please contact Jenny.

These bracelets were created by Dr. Jenny Baeseman, an international Arctic and Antarctic scientist, educator, and policy advisor with over 20 years of experience coordinating researchers in both poles and the cryosphere. She wanted to create a fun and fashionable way to increase awareness of the impacts of climate and environmental changes in general. At the same time, she needed to do something creative and ‘artsy’ - something to make science, particularly, environmental science, a bit more ‘main-stream’. It started with the #ShowYourStripes bracelets and is expanding with other Science Swag using fun and creative ways to show appreciation for science in unique and sometimes inconspicuous ways… aiming to make for great conversation starters and share how ‘cool’ and important science is. All products are designed by a ‘right-left brained scientist’ and hand-crafted by a small woman-owned business in Wisconsin, USA (GO PACKERS) with the goal to help you share your commitment to discovery, sustainability, and scientific advancement.
